Stone Mountain,
Georgia real estate offers the comforts of country living with close proximity to all the amenities of a big city. Located just 20 miles east of Atlanta, Stone Mountain is a small town of 7,000, although it can feel like more when thousands come through the tiny town in the summertime, on their way to visit the nearby State Park. Located in the Piedmont Province of Georgia in DeKalb County, Stone Mountain is a picturesque, growing town that includes several communities. It was first settled in 1790 and named “Rock Mountain,” until Reverend Adel Sherwood renamed it in 1825. The village, located at the base of the mountain, was incorporated in 1839 and is the second oldest city in the county – and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was first called “New Gibraltar” and wasn’t changed to Stone Mountain until 1947. The slogan of the town is “Where the Old South and the New South Meet,” and its’ historic downtown Main Street does indeed retain the look and feel of a former time and place. However, over fifty specialty shops, art galleries and restaurants line the streets offering a wide variety of unique items and first-class services. Other attractions in town include a Civil War Museum; the ART Station, stately antebellum mansions, and a new multi-purpose path that has been constructed that links downtown with the State Park. Other small town advantages, such as free concerts in the downtown Pavilion are what keep people coming back to Stone Mountain over and over again. The climate is another factor - Stone Mountain is mild throughout the year. The average daytime high temperature in August is 86 degrees, and the average daytime high in January is 49 degrees.
The village of Stone Mountain is situated just outside the West Gate of Stone Mountain State Park – one of the most popular parks in the South. The Park is home to the world’s largest relief carving on the world’s largest mass of exposed granite – often referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world.” The park contains over 3,000 acres of breathtaking scenery, lakes, forestland, nature trails, and fishing and other water sports. Two luxurious inns are located inside the park – operated by a well-known national hotel chain. The park employees approximately 400 part-time and seasonal employees. Many people come to work at the park and fall in love with the area and decide to stay permanently. Others come for retirement, or to purchase a summer home, away from the noise and crowds of the big cities. The median value of a single-family home in Stone Mountain is $122,000, which is well below the national average. The median age of a home here is 22 years. All types of real estate can be found in the Stone Mountain area – cabins, lots, land, homes or commercial properties. Many have beautiful views of the lake or mountain. Whether you’re thinking of a permanent move, or looking for a vacation property, there are many agents, either in the town of Stone Mountain or nearby Atlanta who can help you with your search.
